Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a flight risk

Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.
