Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
