Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
